School Aged Programs and Fiteracy
School Aged programs that use Fiteracy offer children after school physical activity opportunities that also encourage talking, designing and creativity.
Aim of School Aged Fiteracy Programs
The aim of the school aged Fiteracy programs is to encourage the combination of literacy development activities such as music/ maths/ drawing or story telling, with movement and physical activity programs.
Professional Development for School Staff
School teachers/teacher aids are able to learn how to apply the Fitercy concepts into their existing school programs.
Using the Fiteracy Modules, school staff are encouraged to develop programs that allow children to assist with the design of heath programs such as the Beachies program.
Fiteracy programs for schools are designed around each school community and children and teachers are encouraged to liaise with their school community to design programs that are environmentally sustainable and able to include leadership levels to allow older children to assist with teaching younger children.
The Beachies Program
The Beachies program is an example of a school aged program that encourages children to be active after school whilst also encouraging children to talk about ocean care and collect rubbish on their local beaches.
The Beachies are also encouraged to develop " plastic reduction" initiatives and to develop fund raising initiatives to assist with ocean care projects.
The Beachies have created the " Wax Head" food wraps , a small project involving the children designing a logo, developing a budget and a promotion plan, all whilst running on the beach and picking up rubbish
The Beachies program runs in the Shoalhaven area in NSW and involves families of 4-14 years old.
